Ingredients

  • 1 piece Unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 4 pieces Large eggs
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 1.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg, freshly grated (for topping)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust in a pie pan and crimp the edges as desired. Set the crust aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.

Step 3

Gradually stir in the milk, vanilla extract, melted butter, and salt. Mix until all the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Step 4

Place the prepared pie pan with the crust on a baking sheet to catch any potential spills. Pour the custard mixture into the pie crust, filling it until just below the rim.

Step 5

Freshly grate nutmeg over the top of the custard for a delicate topping and added flavor.

Step 6

Carefully transfer the baking sheet with the pie to the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C).

Step 7

After 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

Step 8

Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours. This allows the custard to fully set.

Step 9

Once cooled, slice and serve at room temperature or chilled. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
