Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine masa harina and salt.

Step 2

Gradually add warm water into the masa harina while mixing with your hands or a spoon. The dough should come together and feel similar to soft Play-Doh. If it feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 3

Knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes to ensure it is smooth and pliable.

Step 4

Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Cover the dough balls with a damp kitchen towel to prevent them from drying out.

Step 5

Preheat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes.

Step 6

While the skillet heats, place a piece of plastic wrap or parchment paper on a tortilla press. Place a dough ball in the center, cover it with another piece of plastic wrap or parchment paper, and press down to flatten the dough into a thin tortilla. If you don’t have a tortilla press, you can use a rolling pin with the dough placed between two sheets of parchment paper.

Step 7

Carefully peel off the top layer of paper and transfer the flattened tortilla onto your hand, then gently place it onto the preheated skillet or griddle.

Step 8

Cook the tortilla for about 30-45 seconds on the first side, then flip it using tongs and cook for another 30-45 seconds. Flip once more and cook for an additional 15-20 seconds until it puffs slightly. Remove from the skillet and wrap in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm.

Step 9

Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls. Serve the tortillas warm and enjoy!
