Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 2 cups Vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon Apple cider vinegar

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the flour, and whisk constantly for about 1 minute to create a roux. The mixture should become slightly golden and fragrant.

Step 3

Stir in the chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, oregano, and salt. Continue whisking to fully incorporate the spices into the roux.

Step 4

Add the tomato paste, and whisk until smooth and combined with the spices.

Step 5

Gradually pour in the vegetable broth, about 1/4 cup at a time, while continuously whisking to avoid any lumps. Once all the broth is added, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 6

Simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 7

Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the apple cider vinegar. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Step 8

Let the sauce cool slightly, and it’s ready to use. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer storage.
