Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups Granulated sugar
  • 2 pieces Large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup Hot coffee
  • 2 teaspoons Red food coloring

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar using a handheld or stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients (dry, buttermilk, dry). Mix just until combined.

Step 6

Stir in the hot coffee and red food coloring until the batter is smooth and evenly colored. Do not overmix.

Step 7

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 9

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, carefully turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Step 10

Frost and decorate as desired. A classic cream cheese frosting pairs beautifully with this cake.
