Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 0.75 cup Whole milk or buttermilk
  • 1.5 teaspoons Red chili flakes
  • 0.5 cup Cheddar cheese (shredded, optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (melted, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and red chili flakes to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, mix until the butter pieces are about the size of small peas and the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

If you're adding cheese, gently fold in the shredded cheddar at this stage.

Step 5

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the milk or buttermilk. Stir gently with a fork or wooden spoon until just combined, being careful not to overmix. The dough will be slightly shaggy and sticky.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it 4–5 times to bring it together. Pat or roll the dough into a ¾-inch thick rectangle.

Step 7

Using a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, cut biscuits out of the dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet, about 1 inch apart. Gently reshape any scraps of dough to cut additional biscuits.

Step 8

Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter to promote browning and add flavor.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and serve warm. Optionally, you can brush more melted butter over the tops before serving for extra richness.
