Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 pieces hoagie rolls
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Step 3

Push the beef to one side of the skillet and add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the other side. Sauté the vegetables until softened, about 4-5 minutes, then mix them into the beef.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the Worcestershire sauce, beef stock, ketchup, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 6

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of water until dissolved. Stir this slurry into the beef mixture and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and lay the provolone cheese slices on top of the beef mixture. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 8

Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and toast them lightly, if desired.

Step 9

Spoon the cheesesteak sloppy joe mixture into the hoagie rolls and serve immediately.
