Ingredients

  • 500 ml milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 50 g granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until small bubbles begin to form along the edges. Do not allow it to boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set it aside to cool slightly.

Step 2

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined and slightly frothy.

Step 3

Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to combine. Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to prevent the eggs from cooking prematurely.

Step 4

Return the mixture to the saucepan and place it over low heat.

Step 5

Cook the custard, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon, until it thickens enough to coat the back of the spoon, about 8–10 minutes. Do not let the custard boil, as this can cause it to curdle.

Step 6

Once thickened, remove the saucepan from heat and immediately pour the custard into serving dishes or ramekins.

Step 7

Sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top of each dish for added flavor.

Step 8

Allow the custard to cool slightly before serving warm, or refrigerate for at least 1 hour if serving chilled.
