Ingredients

  • 4 pieces cube steaks
  • 0.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium, thinly sliced yellow onion
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

In a shallow dish, mix the flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Dredge each cube steak in the seasoned flour, coating both sides, and shake off excess flour.

Step 2

Heat the vegetable oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the butter has melted and is sizzling, add the cube steaks to the skillet.

Step 3

Cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crisp. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

Step 4

Lower the heat to medium, and in the same skillet, add the sliced onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and lightly browned.

Step 5

Add the beef broth and soy sauce to the skillet, scraping the bottom to deglaze and incorporate all the browned bits into the gravy.

Step 6

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with the water to make a slurry. Gradually add the slurry to the gravy while stirring constantly to thicken.

Step 7

Return the cube steaks to the skillet, spoon some of the gravy over them, and reduce the heat to low.

Step 8

Cover the skillet with a lid and let the steaks simmer for 5-7 minutes to heat through and absorb the flavors of the gravy.

Step 9

Serve the cube steaks hot, smothered in gravy, alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables.
