Ingredients

  • 1 lb store-bought pizza dough
  • 12 pieces frozen meatballs, thawed
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick. Use a knife or pizza cutter to divide the dough into four equal rectangles.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix the egg and water to create an egg wash. Set aside.

Step 4

Place three thawed meatballs in the center of each dough rectangle. Spoon 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce over the meatballs.

Step 5

Top each set of meatballs with 1/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese and 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 6

Sprinkle a pinch of dried Italian seasoning and garlic powder over the cheese for added flavor.

Step 7

Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the edges of each dough rectangle with the egg wash.

Step 8

Fold one side of the dough over the filling to create a sealed pocket (calzone). Pinch the edges together firmly to seal, then crimp with a fork for extra security.

Step 9

Transfer the calzones to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash to help them brown beautifully.

Step 10

Using a sharp knife, cut two small slits in the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape during baking.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and the dough is cooked through.

Step 12

Allow the calzones to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with extra marinara sauce for dipping, if desired.
