Ingredients

  • 4 medium Potatoes
  • 300 grams Cooked meat (e.g., beef, pork, or sausages)
  • 1 large Yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 0 to taste Pickled beets (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and dice them into small, uniform cubes (about 1 cm). Dice the cooked meats into similar-sized pieces. Finely chop the onion.

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or butter over medium heat. Add the diced potatoes and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown on the outside and tender inside.

Step 3

Remove the potatoes from the skillet and set aside. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil or butter to the skillet, then add the chopped onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onions are soft and slightly caramelized.

Step 4

Add the diced cooked meat to the skillet with the onions and cook for another 4-5 minutes until the meat is heated through and lightly browned.

Step 5

Return the cooked potatoes to the skillet. Season with salt and black pepper. Toss everything together and cook for 2-3 more minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 6

While the hash is finishing, fry the eggs in a separate skillet to your desired doneness (sunny-side up is traditional).

Step 7

Serve the Pytt i Panna hot, topped with a fried egg. Optionally, garnish with pickled beets on the side for a traditional Swedish touch.
