Ingredients

  • 4 pounds pork shoulder (pork butt)
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 16 pieces slider buns
  • 2 cups coleslaw (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, mix together kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper.

Step 2

Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.

Step 3

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C) or set your slow cooker on low.

Step 4

Place the pork shoulder in a large roasting pan or slow cooker. Pour the apple cider vinegar around the meat.

Step 5

Cover the roasting pan tightly with aluminum foil or cover the slow cooker with its lid.

Step 6

If using an oven, roast for 6-8 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 8-10 hours.

Step 7

While the pork is cooking, prepare the barbecue sauce by heating vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat.

Step 8

Add mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, honey, and water to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.

Step 9

Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning if necessary, then set aside.

Step 10

Once the pork is done, transfer it to a large bowl and shred it using two forks.

Step 11

Mix the shredded pork with half of the prepared barbecue sauce, reserving the rest for serving.

Step 12

To assemble the sliders, split the slider buns in half.

Step 13

Place a generous portion of pulled pork on the bottom half of each bun.

Step 14

Top the pork with coleslaw, if using, and drizzle with extra barbecue sauce.

Step 15

Cover with the top bun and serve immediately.
