Ingredients

  • 4 lbs Pork shoulder (also called pork butt)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Liquid smoke (optional)
  • 1 cup Chicken broth
  • 1.5 cups Barbecue sauce
  • 8 pieces Hamburger buns or sandwich rolls
  • 2 cups Coleslaw (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder, but leave some fat on for flavor and moisture during cooking.

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar to create a dry rub.

Step 3

Rub the seasoning mixture evenly over the pork shoulder, making sure to coat all sides.

Step 4

Place the seasoned pork shoulder into the crock pot.

Step 5

Pour the chicken broth around the pork in the crock pot and add the liquid smoke if using for extra smoky flavor.

Step 6

Set the crock pot to low heat and cook for about 8 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

Step 7

Once the pork is done, remove it from the crock pot and place it on a large cutting board or platter. Let it rest for about 10 minutes.

Step 8

Using two forks, shred the pork into small pieces, discarding any large pieces of fat.

Step 9

Drain most of the liquid from the crock pot, leaving about 1/2 cup of the cooking juices in the pot to keep the meat moist. Return the shredded pork to the crock pot.

Step 10

Stir in the barbecue sauce with the shredded pork in the crock pot until it is evenly coated. Cover and cook on low for an additional 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Step 11

Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns or sandwich rolls, topped with coleslaw if desired. Enjoy!
