Ingredients

  • 4 lbs Pork shoulder (bone-in or boneless)
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup Chicken broth (or water)
  • 1.5 cups Barbecue sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).

Step 2

Rub the spice mixture evenly over the pork shoulder, ensuring all sides are coated.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Sear the pork shoulder on all sides until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Step 4

Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of the crock pot. Place the seared pork shoulder on top.

Step 5

Pour the chicken broth (or water) around the pork in the crock pot.

Step 6

Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 4-6 hours, until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

Step 7

Once cooked, transfer the pork to a large cutting board or bowl and shred it using two forks, discarding any excess fat.

Step 8

Drain the cooking juices from the crock pot, leaving the onions behind, and return the shredded pork to the crock pot.

Step 9

Stir in the barbecue sauce, mixing well to coat the pork evenly. Let it cook on LOW for an additional 15-20 minutes to warm through.

Step 10

Serve the pulled pork on buns, in tacos, or alongside your favorite sides. Enjoy!
