Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 stalks celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound dried split peas
  • 1 piece or cup ham hock or diced ham
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 cup water (if needed)

Directions

Step 1

Turn on the pressure cooker to the sauté function and add olive oil.

Step 2

Once the oil is hot, sauté the diced onion, carrots, and celery for 4-5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning.

Step 4

Stir in the dried split peas, ham hock or diced ham, chicken or vegetable broth, dried thyme, bay leaf, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using).

Step 5

Close the pressure cooker lid and ensure the valve is set to the sealing position.

Step 6

Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes using the manual or soup setting (depending on your appliance).

Step 7

After cooking, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then carefully perform a quick release for any remaining pressure.

Step 8

Remove the lid and give the soup a stir. Remove the ham hock (if used) and bay leaf. If desired, shred any meat from the ham hock and stir it back into the soup.

Step 9

If the soup is too thick, add up to 1 cup of water to reach your desired consistency. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 10

Serve hot with crusty bread or crackers. Enjoy your comforting bowl of split pea soup!
