Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.75 cups buttermilk
  • 2 whole large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt.

Step 2

In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until thoroughly combined.

Step 3

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 4

Heat vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

Step 5

While the oil is heating, lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger, one smaller) to cut out the donuts.

Step 6

Carefully place a few donuts at a time into the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding the pot. Fry for about 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.

Step 7

Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined rack to drain any excess oil.

Step 8

While still warm, place the donuts in a large zip-top bag filled with powdered sugar. Close the bag and gently shake it until all donuts are evenly coated.

Step 9

Serve immediately or let them cool on a wire rack. Best enjoyed fresh.
