Ingredients

  • 4 large Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup Beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunks. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the potatoes, and cook until they are tender (about 15-20 minutes).

Step 2

While the potatoes are cooking, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 3

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain any excess fat.

Step 4

Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, and a pinch of salt, then mash until smooth and creamy.

Step 7

Transfer the sloppy joe mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 8

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the sloppy joe mixture, spreading them out to cover the entire surface.

Step 9

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the mashed potatoes.

Step 10

Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
