Ingredients

  • 4 large Russet potatoes
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 medium Yellow onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Beef broth
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray or a thin layer of butter.

Step 2

Peel the russet potatoes and slice them thinly (about 1/8-inch thick). Set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through (about 6-8 minutes). Drain any excess grease.

Step 4

Finely chop the yellow onion and mince the garlic. Add them to the skillet with the browned beef and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the onion is translucent and fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, coating the meat and vegetables.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to create a smooth sauce. Add the milk, salt, black pepper, and paprika, and let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.

Step 7

Drain the sliced potatoes and layer one-third of them evenly across the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Spoon one-third of the beef mixture over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat the layering process two more times, finishing with the beef mixture on top.

Step 8

Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the casserole.

Step 9

Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 10

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
