Ingredients

  • 6 large Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 cup Fried onions

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2

Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds, about 1/8-inch thick, and set aside.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.

Step 4

Gradually pour in the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps, and cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth and combined.

Step 6

Layer half of the potato slices evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading evenly.

Step 7

Repeat with a second layer of potato slices and the remaining cheese sauce.

Step 8

Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the foil and sprinkle the fried onions evenly over the top of the casserole.

Step 10

Return the dish to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbling.

Step 11

Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
