Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 10 pieces Saltine crackers
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Water

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, crush the saltine crackers into fine crumbs.

Step 2

Add the ground beef, egg, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to the bowl with the cracker crumbs.

Step 3

Mix the ingredients together with your hands or a spoon until fully combined.

Step 4

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 5

Dredge each patty lightly in the all-purpose flour, shaking off any excess.

Step 6

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 7

Once the oil is hot, place the patties in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties and set them aside on a plate.

Step 8

In the same skillet, combine the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, using it to deglaze the pan and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom.

Step 9

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry.

Step 10

Add the cornstarch slurry to the skillet with the beef broth, whisking continuously to thicken the gravy.

Step 11

Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over them.

Step 12

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.

Step 13

Serve the Poor Man's Steak hot with a generous helping of the gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
