Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef (80% lean)
  • 60 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tbsp Milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 250 ml Beef broth
  • 1 tsp Soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Parsley (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty about 2 cm thick. Press a shallow well in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent doming as they cook.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. Keep warm.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the same skillet. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and tender, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate any raw flour taste.

Step 6

Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the soy sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy thickens slightly.

Step 7

Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the steaks and let them warm through for about 2-3 minutes.

Step 8

Transfer the hamburger steaks to individual plates or a serving platter. Pour the onion gravy over the top. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Step 9

Serve hot with your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
