Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef
  • 100 grams Breadcrumbs
  • 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 60 milliliters Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 800 grams Canned whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 50 milliliters Water (optional, to thin sauce)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in the milk for 5 minutes until softened. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, softened breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, egg, parsley, garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined; do not overmix.

Step 3

Roll the mixture into small, evenly sized meatballs, about the size of a golf ball. Place them on a plate or tray.

Step 4

In a large skillet or sauté pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, searing them on all sides until browned. Remove the browned meatballs from the pan and set them aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in the canned tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon, and add the dried oregano. If the sauce appears too thick, add a splash of water to thin it slightly.

Step 6

Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the tomato sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the meatballs simmer gently for 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 8

Serve the Polpette Alla Casalinga warm, over pasta, with crusty bread, or on their own for a comforting meal.
