Ingredients

  • 4 whole Pears (preferably Bosc or Anjou)
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice
  • 1 whole Vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1 whole Cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole Star anise
  • 3 whole Cloves
  • 1 cup Red wine (optional, for a deeper flavor and color)
  • 1 cup Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact for aesthetics. Trim the bottom of each pear slightly so they can stand upright if desired.

Step 2

In a large pot, combine the water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice. If using red wine, add that in as well.

Step 3

Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Add both the seeds and the pod (or the vanilla extract, if using) to the pot.

Step 4

Add the cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves to the liquid. Stir the mixture and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

Step 5

Carefully add the pears to the pot, ensuring they are fully submerged in the liquid. If necessary, add a bit more water to cover them.

Step 6

Lower the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid slightly ajar and poach the pears for 25-35 minutes, or until they are tender when pierced with a knife.

Step 7

Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the pears from the pot and set them aside on a plate.

Step 8

Increase the heat to medium-high and let the poaching liquid simmer until it reduces to a syrupy consistency, approximately 10 minutes.

Step 9

Serve the pears warm or at room temperature. Drizzle the reduced syrup over the pears and top with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
