Ingredients

  • 8 pieces Fresh figs
  • 250 milliliters Red wine
  • 250 milliliters Water
  • 100 grams Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 piece Vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1 piece Cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip Orange zest
  • 1 piece Star anise
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Gently rinse the figs under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Remove the stems if desired.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the red wine, water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.

Step 3

If using a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Add both the seeds and the pod (or vanilla extract) to the saucepan along with the cinnamon stick, orange zest, and star anise.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing the spices to infuse the liquid for about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Carefully add the figs to the simmering liquid. Ensure they are submerged partially, but do not stir too vigorously to avoid damaging the fruit.

Step 6

Poach the figs on low heat for 15-20 minutes, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking. The figs should become tender but still hold their shape.

Step 7

Using a slotted spoon, remove the figs and set them aside in a serving dish.

Step 8

Increase the heat slightly and simmer the poaching liquid for another 5-10 minutes, or until it reduces and thickens into a syrup-like consistency.

Step 9

Strain the syrup if desired to remove the spices and zest, then pour it over the figs.

Step 10

Allow the figs to cool slightly before serving. They can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled, accompanied by whipped cream, mascarpone, or vanilla ice cream for a decadent touch.
