Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 0.5 cup chicken or beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Toast the inside of the hamburger buns for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown. Set aside.

Step 2

In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat, if necessary.

Step 3

Push the cooked beef to one side of the skillet, and in the other side, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Sauté the diced onion, red bell pepper, and garlic for 3-4 minutes, until softened and aromatic.

Step 4

Stir the ground beef and sautéed vegetables together in the skillet. Add the tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and brown sugar. Mix well to evenly coat the ingredients.

Step 5

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and broth. Stir thoroughly and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 6

Season with salt and black pepper to taste, adjusting as necessary.

Step 7

Spoon the pleasantly tart Sloppy Joes mixture onto the toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately. Optional: Serve with a side of pickles or coleslaw for extra tang.
