Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 0.25 oz Active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp Salt (for dough)
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 28 oz Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 0.5 tsp Salt (for sauce)
  • 1 tsp Sugar (for sauce)
  • 0.25 tsp Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil (for sauce)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.

Step 2

Add olive oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Slowly stir in the flour, one cup at a time, until a sticky dough forms.

Step 3

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a small amount of flour as needed.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turn it to coat, and cover with a damp towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the pizza sauce. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Step 6

Add minced garlic to the saucepan and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

Step 7

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and season with dried oregano, dried basil, salt, sugar, and optional crushed red pepper flakes.

Step 8

Simmer the sauce over low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 9

Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and divide it into two equal portions (for two large pizzas) or more for smaller pizzas.

Step 10

Roll out the dough to your desired thickness, then transfer it to a lightly greased pizza pan or parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 11

Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). Spread a thin layer of the prepared sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.

Step 12

Add your favorite pizza toppings and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

Step 13

Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve!
