Ingredients

  • 12 ounces cranberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks, fresh or canned (drained if canned)
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 0.125 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the cranberries under cold water and set them aside. If using frozen cranberries, no need to thaw them.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely.

Step 3

Add the cranberries to the saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries begin to burst.

Step 4

Gently fold in the pineapple chunks, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and salt. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Step 5

If desired, stir in the orange zest for an extra layer of citrusy brightness.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sauce to cool to room temperature. As it cools, it will thicken slightly.

Step 7

Transfer the sauce to a serving dish or an airtight container if making ahead. Serve chilled or at room temperature alongside your favorite dishes.
