Ingredients

  • 15 pieces Dried chile de árbol peppers
  • 3 pieces Roma tomatoes
  • 2 pieces Garlic cloves
  • 0.5 pieces White onion
  • 1 cup Water
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon Lime juice (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a dry skillet over medium heat. Toast the dried chile de árbol peppers for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant but not burned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 2

In the same skillet, add the Roma tomatoes, half onion, and garlic cloves. Roast them for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skin of the tomatoes is blistered and the garlic and onion are slightly charred.

Step 3

In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Turn off the heat, add the toasted chile de árbol peppers to the water, and let them soak for 5 minutes to soften.

Step 4

Transfer the roasted tomatoes, onion, garlic, and softened chiles (along with 1/4 cup of the soaking liquid) into a blender or food processor.

Step 5

Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and blend until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding additional soaking liquid, 1 tablespoon at a time, if the salsa is too thick.

Step 6

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Pour in the blended salsa and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, to deepen the flavor.

Step 7

Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt if needed, and stir in lime juice if desired for extra brightness.

Step 8

Remove from heat, let cool slightly, and serve warm or at room temperature with your favorite dishes or chips.
