Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 2 large russet potato
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 3 large garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes (canned, with juices)
  • 1 cup green peas (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water or beef stock
  • 0.25 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and dice them into small cubes (about 1/2-inch). Place in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2

Finely dice the onion and mince the garlic. Set aside.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a paper towel, then add them to the skillet. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden and tender. Remove the potatoes from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the beef is browned and cooked through.

Step 6

Stir in the tomato paste, diced tomatoes, cumin, cinnamon, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

Step 7

Add the cooked potatoes back to the skillet along with the green peas. Stir to incorporate all ingredients.

Step 8

Pour in the water or beef stock and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and any excess liquid to reduce.

Step 9

Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remove from heat and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro, if desired.

Step 10

Serve the Picadillo Hash warm, either on its own or with a side of warm tortillas or rice.
