Ingredients

  • 1 pound ribeye steak
  • 4 pieces hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Step 1

Place the ribeye steak in the freezer for 20-30 minutes to slightly firm; this makes it easier to slice thinly.

Step 2

While the steak is firming up, peel and thinly slice the yellow onion.

Step 3

Remove the steak from the freezer and slice it as thinly as possible against the grain, then set aside.

Step 4

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and golden. Remove the onions and set aside.

Step 5

Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak in batches to avoid overcrowding.

Step 6

Cook the steak for about 2-3 minutes until no longer pink, using a spatula to chop and separate the meat as it cooks.

Step 7

Season the cooked steak with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir to evenly distribute the seasoning.

Step 8

Return the sautéed onions to the skillet and mix them with the cooked steak.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low and lay 2 slices of provolone cheese per portion (or per section of meat) over the steak and onion mixture. Allow the cheese to melt for 1-2 minutes.

Step 10

Meanwhile, slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, leaving one side attached to form a hinge. Lightly toast the rolls, if desired.

Step 11

Scoop the steak, onion, and melted cheese mixture onto each hoagie roll evenly, pressing gently to secure the filling.

Step 12

Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade Philadelphia Cheesesteak!
