Ingredients

  • 300 grams Gouda or Edam cheese
  • 120 milliliters Dry white wine
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon juice
  • 1 dash Nutmeg (freshly grated, optional)
  • 1 pinch Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 loaf Crusty bread (e.g., baguette)
  • 200 grams Vegetables or fruits for dipping (e.g., apple cubes, carrot sticks, broccoli florets)

Directions

Step 1

Grate the Gouda or Edam cheese and set it aside.

Step 2

Peel the garlic clove, slice it in half, and rub the inside of a small fondue pot or saucepan with the cut sides of the garlic to infuse its flavor. Discard the garlic or leave it in for a stronger garlic taste.

Step 3

In the same pot, combine the white wine and lemon juice. Heat gently over medium heat until warm, but do not boil.

Step 4

In a small bowl, toss the grated cheese with the cornstarch until evenly coated. This will prevent the cheese from clumping while melting.

Step 5

Gradually add the cheese to the warmed wine, a handful at a time, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk after each addition until fully melted and smooth.

Step 6

Once the cheese is completely melted, add a dash of nutmeg (if using) and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Stir to incorporate.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low to keep the fondue warm and smooth while serving.

Step 8

Cut the bread into bite-sized cubes and prepare the vegetables and fruits for dipping.

Step 9

Serve the fondue immediately with skewers or fondue forks for dipping the bread, vegetables, and fruits into the melted cheese.
