Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups Black beans (cooked or canned, drained and rinsed)
  • 0.5 cups TVP (textured vegetable protein)
  • 0.5 cups Boiling water
  • 0.5 cups Breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 0.5 cups Rolled oats
  • 0.5 cups Onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon Ground flaxseed
  • 2.5 tablespoons Water (for the flaxseed)
  • 1.5 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil (for cooking, optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a heatproof bowl, combine the TVP with the boiling water. Stir and let sit for 5-7 minutes, or until the TVP has absorbed the water and softened.

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix the ground flaxseed with 2.5 tablespoons of water to create a flax egg. Let sit for 5 minutes until thickened.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks for texture.

Step 4

Add the rehydrated TVP, breadcrumbs, rolled oats, chopped onion, minced garlic, flax egg, soy sauce, smoked paprika, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl with the black beans.

Step 5

Mix the ingredients thoroughly with clean hands or a spoon until everything is evenly combined. The mixture should hold together when pressed. If it feels too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs; if too dry, add a small amount of water.

Step 6

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each portion into a burger patty approximately ¾-inch thick.

Step 7

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil, if using. Alternatively, you can grill or bake the patties on a lined baking sheet at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking.

Step 8

Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side in the skillet, or until they develop a golden crust and firm up.

Step 9

Serve immediately on a bun with your favorite toppings or on a bed of greens for a lighter option. Enjoy your delicious Black Bean and TVP Burgers!
