Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 1.5 tbsp Freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 large Yellow onions
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 4 Burger buns
  • 4 Cheese slices (optional)
  • 4 Lettuce leaves
  • 4 Tomato slices
  • 4 tbsp Mayonnaise

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions.

Step 2

Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the butter and olive oil.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the skillet with a pinch of salt and the sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until the onions are soft and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

While the onions cook, divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape into patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Press a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing up during cooking.

Step 5

Generously season both sides of the patties with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper.

Step 6

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates with a paper towel dipped in oil.

Step 7

Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or adjust cooking time to your preferred doneness. Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last minute of cooking, if desired.

Step 8

Toast the burger buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 9

Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun.

Step 10

Top each bun with a lettuce leaf, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, a tomato slice, and the top half of the bun.

Step 11

Serve immediately with your favorite sides and enjoy!
