Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.125 teaspoon salt (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.

Step 2

Stir in the light brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to bubble and the sugar is fully dissolved (about 2-3 minutes).

Step 3

Slowly add the whole milk while stirring, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for about 10 minutes.

Step 5

Once cooled slightly, transfer the mixture to a large mixing bowl. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar using a hand mixer or stand mixer, starting on low speed to prevent splattering.

Step 6

Add the vanilla extract and optional salt, and continue beating until the frosting is thick and smooth. If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon of milk at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.

Step 7

Let the frosting cool completely before spreading it onto your cake or cupcakes. It will firm up as it cools but remains creamy for spreading.
