Ingredients

  • 4 cups ripe pears (peeled, cored, and diced)
  • 1 small yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger (grated)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup orange juice
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 0.25 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup raisins
  • 0.25 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and dice the pears into small cubes. Finely chop the onion and prepare the ginger and garlic by grating and mincing, respectively.

Step 2

In a large saucepan, combine the diced pears, chopped onion, grated ginger, minced garlic, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and orange juice.

Step 3

Stir in the ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground cardamom, red chili flakes, and salt. Add the raisins and water to the mixture.

Step 4

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves completely.

Step 5

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Simmer the chutney uncovered for 35–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and the pears become tender.

Step 6

Use the back of a spoon to gently mash some of the pears for a smoother consistency, if desired.

Step 7

Remove the chutney from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. As it cools, the flavors will meld and intensify.

Step 8

Transfer the pear chutney to a sterilized jar or airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Step 9

Serve the chutney with cheese, roasted meats, or as a flavorful spread on sandwiches.
