Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup Orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 0.5 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup Powdered sugar (optional, for glaze)
  • 1.5 tablespoons Orange juice (optional, for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square baking pan.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Cut in the softened butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, eggs, and milk until smooth.

Step 5

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 6

In a small bowl, mix together the chopped pecans or walnuts, brown sugar, and cinnamon to create the nut topping.

Step 7

Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle half of the nut topping over the batter.

Step 8

Pour the remaining batter on top, spreading it evenly, and then sprinkle the rest of the nut topping over it.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 10

If making the optional glaze, mix the powdered sugar with the orange juice in a small bowl until smooth.

Step 11

Allow the coffee cake to cool slightly before drizzling with the glaze (if using). Serve warm or at room temperature.
