Ingredients

  • 4 large, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced Apples (Granny Smith or similar)
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 0.25 cup Raisins
  • 0.25 cup Chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 6 sheets Phyllo dough sheets
  • 0.5 cup, melted Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons (for garnish, optional) Powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.

Step 3

Stir in the raisins and chopped walnuts or pecans (if using), and set the mixture aside to meld the flavors.

Step 4

On a clean surface, lay out one phyllo dough sheet and brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and brushing butter on all 6 sheets of dough.

Step 5

Spread the apple mixture evenly along one of the shorter ends of the stacked phyllo sheets, leaving about 1 inch of border on the edges. Carefully fold the sides over and roll the dough tightly, starting from the end with the apple mixture, to form a log shape.

Step 6

Place the rolled strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the entire surface generously with melted butter.

Step 7

Using a sharp knife, make a few diagonal slits on the top of the strudel for venting steam during baking.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the phyllo pastry is golden brown and crisp.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let the strudel cool slightly before dusting the top with powdered sugar for garnish.

Step 10

Slice into portions and serve warm. Enjoy!
