Ingredients

  • 2 sheets Puff pastry sheets
  • 8 oz Guava paste
  • 8 oz Cream cheese
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 2 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour (for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

Lightly dust your working surface with all-purpose flour and roll out the puff pastry sheets until smooth.

Step 3

Cut each puff pastry sheet into 4 equal squares, creating a total of 8 pieces.

Step 4

Slice the guava paste into 8 thin rectangular pieces, about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long.

Step 5

Slice the cream cheese into 8 pieces of approximately the same size as the guava paste pieces.

Step 6

Place one piece of guava paste and one piece of cream cheese diagonally in the center of each puff pastry square.

Step 7

Fold the opposite corners of the puff pastry squares over the filling, overlapping them slightly, and press gently to seal.

Step 8

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash.

Step 9

Brush the egg wash over the surface of each pastry to give them a golden-brown crust when baked.

Step 10

Sprinkle a pinch of granulated sugar over each pastry for added sweetness.

Step 11

Transfer the pastries to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow for puffing during baking.

Step 12

Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed up.

Step 13

Remove from the oven and allow the pastries to cool slightly before serving.

Step 14

Serve the pasteles de guayaba warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
