Ingredients

  • 12 ounces pasta shells
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 medium onion
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1

Fill a large pot with water, add 1 tablespoon of salt, and bring it to a boil. Add the pasta shells and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

While the pasta is cooking, finely mince the garlic and chop the onion.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion, and sauté for about 5 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the sauce on low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt or sugar if needed.

Step 6

Add the cooked pasta shells to the sauce, tossing gently to coat each shell evenly with the tomato sauce.

Step 7

Chop the fresh basil leaves and stir them into the pasta just before serving.

Step 8

Plate the pasta shells and top with grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 9

Serve hot and enjoy your comforting pasta shells with tomato sauce.
