Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water (around 110°F) and the active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is foamy and activated.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over low heat until warm (not hot). Remove from heat and add the unsalted butter, stirring until melted. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 4

Add the yeast mixture, lukewarm milk-butter mixture, and the egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place the balls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between them for expansion.

Step 8

Cover the shaped rolls with a clean towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes, or until they double in size again.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

In a small bowl, whisk together one egg and one tablespoon of water to make the egg wash. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash for a glossy, golden finish.

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and have an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C).

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm, optionally with butter or a drizzle of honey.
