Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon Chopped fresh thyme
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large Egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon Water (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.

Step 2

Add olive oil, salt, and grated Parmesan cheese to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

Step 3

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or dough hook until the dough starts to come together.

Step 4

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.

Step 5

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat all sides. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Once risen, punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll or shape the dough into a rectangle, approximately 9x12 inches.

Step 7

In a small bowl, mix melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, and thyme. Spread this garlic-herb butter evenly over the dough.

Step 8

Roll the dough tightly starting from one of the longer edges, forming a log. Pinch the seam to seal. Place the rolled dough seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 9

In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the top of the dough evenly with the egg wash.

Step 10

Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slashes across the top of the dough, about 1/2 inch deep.

Step 11

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Let the loaf rest for 15-20 minutes while the oven heats up.

Step 12

Bake the bread for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 13

Let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!
