Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 0.75 cups Parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • 0.25 cups fresh basil, finely chopped
  • 0.75 cups milk
  • 1 large egg

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

Step 3

Add the chilled, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Mix in the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped basil, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

Step 5

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well combined.

Step 6

Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour the milk-egg mixture into it. Gently stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be soft but not sticky.

Step 7

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead 3-4 times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick.

Step 8

Cut the dough into 8 wedges (like slicing a pizza) and place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 16-18 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown on top.

Step 10

Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
