Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 Large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it just starts to steam but does not boil (about 110°F to 115°F). Remove the pan from the heat, and add 2 tablespoons of butter to melt. Let the mixture cool slightly until it’s warm but not hot to the touch.

Step 2

Pour the warm milk and butter mixture into a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 minutes, until frothy.

Step 3

Stir in the sugar and egg using a wooden spoon or spatula until fully combined.

Step 4

Add 2 cups of flour to the bowl, followed by the salt. Mix together until a sticky dough forms. Continue adding the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl but is still soft and slightly tacky.

Step 5

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it by hand for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it once to coat, and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness, and use a round cutter (or the rim of a glass) to cut out circles, each about 3 inches in diameter.

Step 8

Brush each circle lightly with melted butter. Fold the circles in half and press the edges lightly to seal. Arrange the folded rolls slightly overlapping on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 9

Cover the rolls loosely with a towel and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes, until puffy.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with the remaining melted butter. Let cool slightly before serving.
