Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 8 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Warm water (110°F-115°F)
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • 1 large Eggs
  • 4 tablespoons Melted butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it just begins to steam. Do not let it boil. Remove from heat and stir in 4 tablespoons of the butter and the sugar until the butter is melted. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Step 2

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it stand for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, the yeast mixture, and 1 cup of flour. Stir until smooth. Add the salt and beaten egg, and mix until combined.

Step 4

Slowly add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing after each addition. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5-7 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Once risen, punch the dough down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out into a 12x8-inch rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.

Step 7

Using a knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into 2x3-inch rectangles.

Step 8

Brush each rectangle with melted butter. Fold each piece in half, buttered side on the inside, and slightly press down to seal.

Step 9

Arrange the folded rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, placing them close together. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let the rolls rise again in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 11

Brush the tops of the rolls with more melted butter. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and brush with the remaining melted butter for extra shine and flavor. Serve warm.
