Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned and crumbled. Drain excess grease.

Step 3

Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 6

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley. Mix until well blended.

Step 7

Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Place a layer of lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.

Step 8

Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture onto the noodles, followed by 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Add another layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 9

Repeat the layering process (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, sauce) two more times, finishing with a generous layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 10

Sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top layer.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil, making sure the foil does not touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.

Step 13

Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your homemade Papa D's Lasagna!
