Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 pieces garlic cloves
  • 0.25 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons sugar (optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 0.25 cups parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoons dried basil or parsley (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Peel and finely mince the garlic cloves. Add them to the saucepan and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 3

Add the crushed red pepper flakes and stir for an additional 30 seconds.

Step 4

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Step 5

Stir in the dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Taste the sauce and add sugar if needed to balance acidity.

Step 6

Simmer the sauce uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

If desired, stir in grated parmesan cheese during the last 5 minutes of cooking for added richness.

Step 8

Remove the saucepan from heat. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 9

Serve immediately over pasta, pizza, or your favorite dish. Garnish with dried basil or parsley, if desired.
