Ingredients

  • 3 medium yellow onions
  • 2 large garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons coconut aminos
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 0.5 teaspoon sea salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions.

Step 2

Peel and mince the garlic cloves.

Step 3

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 4

Add the sliced onions and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions become soft and translucent.

Step 5

Lower the heat to medium-low and add the minced garlic. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring to prevent burning.

Step 6

Pour in the water, and stir in the coconut aminos, apple cider vinegar, and honey.

Step 7

Let the mixture simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid reduces and the onions become caramelized and golden brown.

Step 8

Season with sea salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to combine.

Step 9

Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add a splash of water if the sauce is too thick for your liking.

Step 10

Let the sauce cool slightly and serve warm or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
