Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, diced yellow onion
  • 1 medium, diced bell pepper
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.25 cup raisins
  • 0.5 cup, sliced green olives
  • 1 whole bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional for garnish) fresh cilantro

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, and sauté until the onion is translucent and the pepper is softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

Step 3

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until it is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the ground cumin, ground cinnamon, sea salt, and black pepper, mixing well to coat the beef evenly with the spices.

Step 5

Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, raisins, green olives, and bay leaf to the skillet. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Step 6

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the picadillo cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Step 8

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired.
