Ingredients

  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 0.75 cup water
  • 0.5 medium, finely chopped red onion
  • 0.5 medium, finely chopped tomato
  • 1 finely chopped green chili
  • 2 tablespoons, finely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 0.25 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the gram flour, water, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, salt, and black pepper.

Step 2

Whisk the mixture well to ensure there are no lumps and you have a smooth batter. The consistency should be slightly thicker than pancake batter.

Step 3

Add the finely chopped onion, tomato, green chili, and cilantro to the batter. Mix well to incorporate all the ingredients.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick skillet or a cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil and spread it around to coat the pan evenly.

Step 5

Pour a ladleful of batter onto the skillet and spread it gently using the back of the ladle to form a round pancake, about 5-6 inches in diameter.

Step 6

Cook the cheela for 2-3 minutes on one side or until the edges start to lift and the underside is golden brown. Flip it over using a spatula.

Step 7

Cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes until it's cooked through and golden brown.

Step 8

Transfer the cooked cheela to a plate and repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding more oil as needed.

Step 9

Serve the paleo besan cheela hot with a side of fresh chutney or salad.
