Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole wheat flour
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Low-fat milk
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar (for filling)
  • 1.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons Unsweetened applesauce (for filling)
  • 0.5 cup Powdered sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon Low-fat milk (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the packet of yeast, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and warm milk (about 110°F). Stir and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, remaining granulated sugar, and salt.

Step 3

Melt the butter and let it cool slightly. Add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture, whisking until combined.

Step 4

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 7-8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm area, or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle (about 16x12 inches). Spread the unsweetened applesauce evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

Step 8

Combine brown sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the applesauce layer.

Step 9

Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Using a sharp knife or a piece of dental floss, slice the log into 12 equal pieces.

Step 10

Place the rolls cut-side up in the prepared baking dish. Cover with a towel and let rise for 30 minutes.

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 12

While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and low-fat milk until smooth.

Step 13

Allow the cinnamon rolls to cool slightly, then drizzle the glaze over the tops before serving. Enjoy warm!
