Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles, uncooked

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, and garlic until the meat is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

While the sauce simmers, prepare the cheese mixture by combining ricotta cheese, the egg, parsley, and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese in a mixing bowl. Stir until well combined and set aside.

Step 5

Boil a large pot of water and cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and rinse them with cold water to prevent sticking.

Step 6

Spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

Lay 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread one-third of the ricotta cheese mixture on top of the noodles, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over it.

Step 8

Repeat the layers two more times: meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese.

Step 9

Pour the remaining meat sauce on top and finish by sprinkling the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the remaining Parmesan cheese evenly over the surface.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (spray the underside of the foil with nonstick cooking spray so it doesn’t stick to the cheese).

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 12

Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.

Step 13

Cut into squares and serve hot. Enjoy!
